The Ciavolich family boasts an antique winegrowing tradition.
At the top of the town of Miglianico (Ch), opposite the Church of San Pantaleone,
it is still possible to admire and visit the old winery founded by Francesco Ciavolich in 1853,
It was built on two levels: one at ground level and the other underground, connected to Palazzo
Ciavolich, which overlooks it, by a tunnel dug into the sandstone.
The grapes were pressed in the yard in front of the building and the fresh must ran down into the vats located on the underground floor. Fermentation took place here and the wine obtained was racked into big 132 hl barrels which can still be admired today.
The winery was operational until 1944, the year in which the living quarters on the upper floor were used as the headquarters of the German Command during its withdrawal and the underground room offered Giuseppe Ciavolich and several local families protection against the bombings.
In 2007, following meticulous restoration work, one of the most significant examples of the history of winemaking in Abruzzo was returned to its original splendour. Today this magical place is once again the hub of life on the estate and hosts the first level of a cosy wine bar where you can taste the Ciavolich wines and local cuisine by candlelight, while the underground level still hosts the old barrels where the great red wines made on the Loreto Aprutino estate (Pescara) repose.
